Zans Wheatgrass “The Nutrient Density in One Ounce of Wheatgrass is Equivalent to 2.5 pounds of the choicest vegetables.”

Michael-Paul Patterson

For my money, this is one of the greatest superfoods one can get. We bought some wheat berries at 50¢ or 60¢ a kilo. Some black earth, a few bucks a bag. My wife Suzanne, whom I call Zan, had some algae already, so she uses that to spray the wheatgrass as it gets on its way.

True, it does take time, but if you calculate the time per day, it comes out to about 10 minutes per day. It takes about seven days, in good growing conditions. That’s not a lot considering the overall health benefits of chlorophyll.

In this article, I will go over the steps one would take in order to cultivate wheatgrass, as if is displayed in the picture above, and will be displayed in other pics that I will add in this article. I will go step by step, and try to make it as easy to understand as possible, after all it isn’t rocket science.

Equipment:

The equipment that you need are as follows:

  1. Large deli jar, or equivalent, to sprout the berries in
  2. Cheese cloth.
  3. Elastic band to hold the cheese cloth in place over mouth of jar.
  4. 32 x 53 cm trays, which equals 1696 sq cm or similar – I have created a formula for you, which will be as a sidebar, so you can calculate if you can’t find these exact dimensions.
  5. Spray bottle
  6. Cloth. Small towel or washcloth.
  7. And of course red winter or hard wheat berries. – equivalent to bread wheat.
100_0286 Step 1

First you take your wheat berries and place them into the deli jar, or equivalent. Bring your jar to the sink and add the hottest  water possible to completely cover the berries, fill the jar around ¾ full, place cheese cloth over the mouth of the jar. Set the jar on the counter for 12 hours, Suzanne does it over night.

Next day, empty the water, by leaving the cheese cloth on and turning the jar up-side-down over the sink. Rinse, the berries by filling the jar ¾ full. Do this two or three times. You can remove the cheese cloth while you are filling the jar  if you wish and if it makes it easier, but you don’t have to.

Put the cheese cloth back on and place your jar on  the counter, tipped on it’s side, over night. This will be explained in in the next step.
